2002-2003 Grants Awarded

More than $185,000 was awarded during the fiscal year of 2002-03 to 7 grantees. Plans are being made to offer grant writing classes in the late summer in the rural areas of our 12-county region.

Allendale County Hospital
"Pink Prevention"

This grant will fund screening/diagnostic mammograms for underinsured/uninsured women in all 12 counties below minimum age for Best Chance Network (47).
This is a new grant.



Hollings Cancer Center
Prescription Drug Supportive Care Program

This grant goes into its second successful year providing outpatient medications for disease treatment and /or pain and symptom management for uninsured or underinsured breast cancer patients in our 12 county area.



Hollings Cancer Center/Roper Hospital
Collaborative Project to fund PET Staging scans

Collaboration amongst medical facilities is highly encouraged, and thus this new grant begins the process. This grant will enable uninsured or underinsured patients currently being treated for breast cancer to have access to state of art diagnostic Positron Emission Tomography scans. These scans help identify how a patient is responding to a particular type of treatment. Is also helps increase the understanding as to whether or not the disease is stable, improving or is progressing.



South Carolina Office of Rural Health
Low Country Breast Health Project

This new grantee targets education, awareness, and support for the survivors and at risk women in Allendale, Bamberg, Barnwell, Colleton, and Hampton Counties. It will help establish four new support groups in local hospitals. They will continue to build breast health coalition.



Bamberg County Hospital and Nursing Home
Bamberg County Breast Cancer Project

This marks their fourth year of funding. The Review Panel and The Board of Directors amended their budget to reflect 99 percent of their grant money to target directly to the needs of women in Allendale, Bamberg, Barnwell and Hampton Counties. The funding will cover mammograms, transportation, advertisement, and some follow up treatment.



Medical University of South Carolina
College of Nursing
"Mama and Me - An Expansion Project"

This second year grant primarily serving African American and Hispanic women. This year the program will expand into more rural and inner city communities in Charleston and Georgetown Counties. This is also a joint effort between Hollings Cancer Center and MUSC School of Nursing. They will continue to take the Mobile Unit into these areas and facilitate follow up for the medically underserved.



Hollings Cancer Center
Psycho-Oncology Services in Underserved Areas

This new and creative grant will provide psycho-oncology services to women living in rural and underserved areas: Johns Island, McClellanville, North Charleston, and Georgetown County. Collaboration between physicians, rural clinic and other community groups will be used to help with coordination of care. This program will not begin until August 1, 2002.
