Abstract Summary: Women's Health Matters provides free clinical breast exams and mammograms for eligible low-income women who live in Beaufort County. It targets African-American, Caucasian and Latino women between the ages of 40 and 64 who live at, or below, 200 percent of federal poverty guidelines with no health insurance covering breast cancer screening and detection. This grant targets an additional 300 mammograms and 20 follow-ups with additional awareness about early detection.
Breast Cancer Navigator Program

Abstract Summary: Provides personalized assistance to newly diagnosed breast cancer patients, who are uninsured or underinsured. The Navigator will coordinate diagnosis and treatment services to help patients cope with specialists, testing site and therapy centers. It hopes to improve the patient's decision-making and coping skills, recovery periods and overall well-being. The funding will also provide free nutritional dietary supplements and free cancer related drugs, as prescribed by their physician.
Breast Cancer: For Us/By Us

Abstract Summary: A collaboration between Community Health Partners of The Lowcountry, WCBD-TV 2, Citadel Communications, individual African-American women, African-American women's organizations and S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control to commit to reducing the mortality rates of breast cancer in African-American women by increasing breast cancer awareness, early detection practices and preventive measures in the target population.
Breast Cancer Genetic Counseling for At-Risk Families from Underserved Lowcountry Communities

Abstract Summary: A joint venture between Hollings Cancer Center and MUSC, where individuals determined by health professionals to be at increased risk of hereditary breast cancer are counseled by a board certified genetic counselor. This grant will allow this counselor to travel to outlying communities to introduce this service to health departments, hospitals and private practice physicians. The counselors will travel to Beaufort and Georgetown on a rotating schedule to see patients for breast cancer genetic counseling from distant counties for whom travel to Charleston would be a hardship.

Abstract Summary: To reach women at three churches in Hampton County with culturally appropriate messages about good breast care. Innovative types of presentations will be used to reach large groups of women. It is hoped that through these messages many women will begin to use early detection methods and the rate of mortality from breast cancer will decrease.
