Think Pink
Regional Medical Center Orangeburg
Awarded: $57,630

This grant will provide education to the women of our area in helping them make informed decisions about their breast health care. The grant will provide funds for women, ages 35-46 with limited or no insurance and a resident of Orangeburg County, South Carolina to receive a screening mammogram. We will also serve women with physician's referral for a diagnostic mammogram/ultrasound. 148 women had mammograms under this program last year.

Women 47-64 that do not qualify for Best Chance Network will be accepted into this program this year. (Best Chance will verify.)

Lunch and learn sessions will be held through out the area to get information out to women that need to be aware that early detection of breast cancer is the answer. Mammographic images will be shown in these sessions so women can see actual images of breast cancers that are so small they will never be felt by the patients themselves. We show how self breast exams are conducted and we have question and answer session.

It is a day where the CBC sets aside for women from our partners, and strives to perform all necessary exams in one office visit. We are able to reach women whose breast health needs are traditionally underserved: ethnic minorities, the homeless, the uninsured and underinsured, the working poor and elderly. We provide breast health education, refreshments; assist with transportation to our facility, bags filled with breast health information, and donated personal items. Our goal is to further enhance this program and breast health education for our patients.

Breast Health Navigation for All Women: Building on Success
Roper St. Francis Foundation

"It's All About Me" GHS Breast Health Clinics
Georgetown Hospital System
Awarded: $62,644

Georgetown hospital system patients have been given great opportunities the best breast healthcare possible. Our seed money was provided by the Lowcountry affiliate of Susan G. Komen the Cure. Digital mammography revolutionized breast screening and diagnostics and GHS has brought this modality to its patients through the imagining center at Waccamaw Medical Park in Murrells Inlet, SC. Coupled with an aggressive program reaching the uninsured and underinsured populations with free mammograms, there is no excuse now women to not receive screening. Systems are in place and active for education and transportation. With this success comes a need to expand our diagnostics services. GHS will bring a second digital mammography operation to Georgetown Memorial Hospital serving patients on the south end of the county. Additionally, Susan G. Komen for the Cure Lowcountry affiliate is helping fund Saturday clinics at the imaging center and GMH to provide on-sight clinical breast exams by physicians, education, high risk assessment, same-day mammograms and follow-up lab work if needed. Through the GHS breast program we encourage patients to say "It's all about me" and to visit our clinics where screening, education and followup are readily available.
